Infill projects can be rewarding in terms of reducing sprawl, but extremely challenging from a site design standpoint. This infill project in the small community of Fairlee was no exception. The site contained 7 large Red Maples, a fruit orchard, and two stands of matures trees. Preserving the trees and fruit orchard became a major concern for citizens of Fairlee; and South Fork Studio responded with a sensitive site plan which protected the existing trees while still satisfying the requirements of the site. We designed road and lot layouts, as well as placing individual houses, while working with the civil engineer to create a bioretention storm water management system for this 5-lot minor subdivision.
South Fork Studio and the developer used open meetings to communicate with the community, and built the project with little disagreement from residents. This process resulted in the creation of a neighborhood that fits into the existing and eclectic village.
