According to the National Japanese American Memorial Foundation, "The Memorial honors those members of the 100th Battalion, 442nd RCT, MIS and other units who fought with conspicuous bravery... In addition, the Memorial honors those who experienced dislocation and were held in the 'relocation' camps during the period 1942-1945."
The nautilus-shaped memorial sits six hundred yards from the U.S. Capitol, and surrounds visitors with an experience of confinement and release, commemorating both the internment and the patriotism of Japanese Americans during World War II.
The prime consultant on the project was Davis Buckley Architects and Planners, and Miles Barnard worked in collaboration with James Urban, FASLA to complete the landscape architectural design, detailing and construction administration work.
